This image shows the effect of a delay value within a sequence element and consists of a horizontal line broken into three segments. The first segment of the line is labelled "audio" and runs approximately 40 percent of the total sequence length. At then end of the audio segment is a shorter segment, about 2 percent of the total length and labelled "5 s" and representing a 5 second delay. At the end of the 5 second delay segment, is another segment labelled "audio", which has about 40 percent of the total length and runs to the completion of the sequence.
The image represents the effect of a synchronization attribute with element event value and consists of a series of horizontal lines representing a parallel group. The parallel groups consists of an audio object and an image object.
At the top of the image is a horizontal line labelled "par" and representing the total length of the parallel group. Beneath this line is another line representing the audio object. It is broken into two segments, the first labelled "6 s", meaning a 6 second delay, and is about 30 percent of the total parallel group length. The second segment is labelled "a" and represents the audio object. The length of the audio object completes the second line (about 70 percent), so that the total length of the delay plus the audio matches the parallel group length above it. The next two lines, beneath the audio sequence, represent the start of an image display four seconds after the beginnin of the audio object. This is shown by a short line segment labelled "4 s", meaning 4 seconds, immediately below the beginning of the audio object. Immediately beneath the end of the 4 second line is the beginning of a line labelled "img", which means an image object. The length of this line, which represents the length of time the image is displayed, runs from the end of the four second delay to the end of the total parallel group length.
This images shows the effect on two parallel media streams when the value of the sync attribute is "hard". The image consists of two horizontal lines of identical length. The top line is labelled audio and the bottom line is labelled video. The first portion of each line is dashed, indicating the playback of both lines is continuous. At the end of the fourth dash, the lines becomes dotted and continues like this for four dots, indicating that one of the media streams has been delayed, and the other stops until the playback can resume. The resumption is indicated by both lines resuming as dashes and continuing until both lines end at the same duration.
Beneath this first example is a second one, showing an alternate behavior for the same circumstance. In this case, the top horizontal line, labelled "audio" is continuous. Beneath it is a second horizontal line labelled "video". About half way through the video line, it changes to a series of four dots, without a similar change in the audio line above it. This indicates that the audio continues, but the video is dropping out frames. The video resumes normal playback, shown by a return to a normal line, just before the end of the sequence.
This image shows two parallel lines of unequal length, the top labelled "audio" and the bottom labelled "video". The audio line is continuous. Beneath the audio line, the video line is non-continuous with a short portion of the middle of the line changed to dots, indicating a delay in the media stream. The length of the video line is longer than the audio by the length of the delay, meaning that the audio will run its normal length of time, and the video will run its full time, plus the length of any delays which occured in receiving the video. The image consists of a large rectangle labelled "media object display area", with coordinates listed at the top left corner of 0, 0.Within the rectangle is a smaller rectangle. The dimensions of this rectangle are given by a seies of dimension lines, with arrow heads at end. The first line is vertical, labelled top-y and runs from the top edge of the outer rectangle to the top of the inner rectangle. The second line is vertical, labelled bottom-y and runs from the top edge of the outer rectangle to the bottom of the inner rectangle. The third line is horizontal, labelled left-x and runs from the left edge of the outer rectangle to left edge of the inner rectangle. The fourth line is horizontal, labelled right-x and runs from the left edge of the outer rectangle to right edge of the inner rectangle. The values of top-y, bottom-y, left-x and right-x provide the information needed to dimension the inner rectangle in the media display area.
